Air Logistics in International Equestrian Sports Organizations: A Comparative Content Analysis on the Operational Roles of Service Providers

Abstract

The supply chain processes of organisations involved in international equestrian sports entail multi-stakeholder logistics operations that require intensive coordination and a high degree of precision. Considering that over 200 racehorses are transported by air on a daily basis worldwide, this mode of transport emerges as a specialized research area due to its high volume and operational complexity.

This study aims to examine the operational processes, products and solutions offered, and corporate strategies of horse air transport service providers operating in prestigious international events using a comparative content analysis method. Within the scope of the research, data obtained from the corporate websites, press releases and industry publications of logistics service providers within the supply chains of major organisations were systematically analysed. The scope of services, equipment and infrastructure standards, animal welfare practices, regulatory compliance and organisation-based operational experience dimensions of these businesses were examined.

The findings reveal that service providers are categorised under two distinct structures based on their operational roles. The first comprises air cargo carriers, which stand out for their air transport capacity and robust logistics infrastructure; the second encompasses specialised service providers that manage all logistics coordination and operational planning for the entire organisational process from start to finish. This study aims to provide a unique conceptual and empirical contribution to the fields of logistics for international sporting events and live animal transport.
